Curbside Recycling Update: Leeward Oahu Get Ready!

City ENV has started delivering recycling carts to nearly 42,000 homes in Leeward Oahu in preparation for the fourth and final phase of the curbside recycling program expansion set to begin the week of May 3. “We’re entering the homestretch to complete the vision we set in motion a few years ago to have island-wide curbside recycling,” Mayor Mufi Hannemann said. “This is just one more step as we continue to make our island home more environmentally friendly and fulfill the goals in our 21st Century Ahupuaa sustainability plan.” The Leeward communities include Waipahu, Waikele, Ewa Beach, Makakilo, Kapolei, West Loch; Honokai Hale and up the coast to Makua. With the addition of these homes into the new program, a total of 160,000 homes on Oahu will be onboard with the automated 3-cart system, helping to divert thousands of tons of waste from our landfill.

For Leeward households, look for the program instructional packet attached on the outside of the blue cart. For most households, your current collection days will remain the same. But in the new system, one collection day is for refuse in the gray cart and the other is for recycling pickup, alternating weekly between the green and blue carts.
